Taylor Palmby Talks HeartSupport
At the end of last month, we reached out to one of our favorite publicists and licensed therapists about her involvement with the non-profit organization HeartSupport.
In 2011, Jake Luhrs, the iconic frontman of the world-famous metal band August Burns Red, embarked on a mission to uplift and support his fans. Every night, fans would share raw, heartfelt stories of addiction, suicide, self-harm, fear, war, hopelessness, and more.
Jake created an online community featuring a forum, groups, and events where fans could openly discuss their struggles and receive support to improve their mental health. HeartSupport has evolved into a vital community for the music scene.
Here is Taylor's story:
“The story is actually quite kismet. In the spring of 2018, I was thinking about leaving journalism to focus on mental health, and I was wanting to start my own organization that connected music fans who were struggling with bands that they loved. Fast forward to the summer; I was interning for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and I begged them to let me cover the last Warped Tour from a mental health perspective.”
“While I was there, I saw HeartSupport's giant support wall, and I just kind of gawked at it. Dan (a HeartSupport staff member) came up to me and asked if I'd heard of HeartSupport, and the rest is history! I've been at HS ever since! It's the best job I've ever had, and it's so much fun to use music to help people with their mental health!“
You can read the story Taylor wrote about the last Warped Tour (we miss you 🥹) here.
On top of being the social media manager for HeartSupport, Taylor also has a YouTube series on the HeartSupport channel where she watches music videos and breaks down lyrics about how they relate to mental health. I personally watched them all and found myself in tears after some of her breakdowns. It’s definitely worth a watch.
